What is a defibrillator?
A defibrillator is a portable device that delivers a controlled electric shock safely. It tries to get the heart to beat normally again when someone has had a cardiac arrest.
Defibrillators are easy to use, even if you've not had training. The emergency operator (999) will talk you through what to do but many defibrillators will also tell you what you need to do and when to do it.
There are only two steps to using a defibrillator.
- Put the defibrillator pads on the person's bare chest (this is no time for modesty).
- Follow the instructions from the defibrillator which will check the patient's heart rhythm and deliver a shock if needed.
Don't worry - Defibrillators do not shock someone unless they detect an abnormal heart rhythm.
